Bhutan: Land of the Thunder Dragon

Country Overview Cradled in the high Himalayas, Bhutan is a kingdom where spirituality and sustainability are the twin pillars of the state. Known as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” it is world-renowned for prioritizing Gross National Happiness over GDP. As the world’s first carbon-negative country, Bhutan offers a pristine landscape of emerald valleys and jagged peaks, where ancient Buddhist traditions are woven into the fabric of modern life.

  • Music & Dance: Sacred Cham mask dances and the folk melodies of the Dramyin (lute) bring Buddhist legends to life.

  • Festivals: The vibrant Tshechu festivals are the heart of social life, featuring dramatic performances and the display of giant Thangkas (sacred scrolls).

  • Attire: The elegant Gho for men and Kira for women are worn daily, representing a proud commitment to national identity.

  • Cuisine Bhutanese food is famously spicy; Ema Datshi (chilies and cheese) is the fiery national dish. Red rice, buckwheat noodles (Puta), and butter tea (Suja) provide hearty sustenance for mountain living.
  • Arts & Heritage The kingdom is famed for its Dzongs—massive fortress-monasteries like the iconic Tiger’s Nest (Paro Taktsang). Traditional heritage is preserved through the Thirteen Crafts (Zorig Chusum), including intricate weaving, slate carving, and papermaking.
  • Contemporary Culture Modern Bhutan balances its roots with a passion for Archery (the national sport) and a growing Eco-tourism industry.
